Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how we work, creating new opportunities while reshaping the skills employers seek. Preparing young people for the future of work means preparing them not just for the jobs that exist today, but for a workforce that will continue to change. Hands-on experiences, career exploration, and opportunities to build confidence and adaptability can help students navigate a world where AI is increasingly part of how we work.
Young people are aware of this changing landscape. Recent research from Junior Achievement USA and Ipsos found that 68% of teens describe themselves as hopeful or optimistic about their futures. Yet 55% are concerned about how artificial intelligence could affect their future job prospects. At the same time, 87% say they learn best when they can apply what they learn to real-world situations.
Together, these findings point to an important opportunity: Young people are optimistic about their futures, but they want practical experiences that help them understand and prepare for what comes next.
The Future of Work Requires Both Human and Technical Skills
While AI is becoming increasingly integrated into nearly every industry, human skills remain essential. Employers continue to value critical thinking, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, and creativity, all skills that help individuals succeed alongside emerging technologies.
The future workforce will belong to individuals who can effectively combine these durable skills with a strong understanding of how technology can be used effectively and responsibly. Giving students opportunities to develop both can help them approach emerging technologies not simply as something to compete against, but as tools they can learn to use.
“AI will be a part of the careers our students pursue, regardless of the industry they choose,” said Sidd Vivek, President and CEO of Junior Achievement of San Diego County (JA San Diego). “Our role is to make sure young people have the knowledge and confidence to understand these tools, use them responsibly, and recognize the opportunities they can create.”
Why AI Literacy Matters for Today’s Students
Understanding AI is increasingly becoming part of being prepared for the workforce. AI literacy is not just about knowing how to use a particular tool. It is about understanding what AI can and cannot do, evaluating the information it produces, recognizing potential risks and biases, and making responsible decisions about when and how to use it.
For students, developing these skills early can make emerging technology feel more approachable while helping them become thoughtful, adaptable users of the tools they will encounter in college, careers, and everyday life.
Recognizing the growing importance of these skills, this school year JA San Diego is implementing an AI micro-credential program offered by San Diego State University into its programming through a partnership with the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation funded by the US Chamber of Commerce. This employer-informed initiative will give students an opportunity to build practical AI knowledge while earning a credential they can carry with them as they pursue future education and career opportunities.
“Employers across industries want people who can use AI effectively, question its output, and apply their own judgment. Together with JA and SDSU, we’re excited to see this employer-verified micro-credential give San Diego students a way to build and demonstrate those skills before they enter the workforce,” said Mark Cafferty, President & CEO San Diego Regional EDC.
Investing in the Next Generation
Young people want learning experiences that feel relevant, practical, and connected to their futures. AI literacy is an important part of that preparation, giving students the opportunity to build confidence with emerging technology while strengthening the critical thinking, adaptability, and decision-making skills that will serve them throughout their careers.
By combining AI literacy with hands-on experiences in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and career readiness, JA San Diego is helping students develop the knowledge and skills to make the most of emerging opportunities and succeed in an increasingly technology-driven workforce.
The future of work is changing. With the right education, experiences, and opportunities, today’s students can be ready to lead it.
