Students Pitch Business Ventures at JA Company of the Year Competition and Tradeshow
Apr 24, 2024 (San Diego, CA) — Shine Designs, a student company from Torrey Pines High, aimed at enhancing nighttime safety for cyclists with fashionable reflective gear, was named the 2024 JA Student Company of the Year by Junior Achievement of San Diego County (JA San Diego).
Shine Designs was one of over 40 teams that participated in the annual JA Company of the Year Competition (JA COY) hosted at the UC San Diego Park & Market. Over the past several months, students partnered with business mentors to support them in developing and strategizing a business plan that addresses an issue facing their community as part of JA Company Program curriculum.
“Fostering an entrepreneurial spirit in young people encourages creativity, critical thinking, and resiliency. JA is equipping students with skills in problem-solving, financial literacy, and leadership which prepares them for the challenges of the future job market while fostering a mindset of innovation and social impact,” said Sidd Vivek, JA San Diego President & CEO.
The following teams were awarded at the 2024 JA COY:
1st Place – Shine Designs (Torrey Pines High) – Reflective wear for cyclists.
2nd Place – PowerUp Games (Canyon Crest Academy) – Fitness card game.
3rd Place – Coastal Cleanerz (e3 Civic High) – Microplastic beach cleaner device.
4th Place – Jeam Beads (San Diego High) – Keychain accessories.
Social Impact Award – Clean Compassion (San Diego High)
Entrepreneurship Award – Key Craft (Canyon Crest Academy)
Innovation Award – Opalia (Canyon Crest Academy)
Shine Designs along with the other top teams will be nominated for the national competition at the National Student Leadership Summit held in Washington DC by Junior Achievement USA.
