As a two-time cancer survivor (Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma)\, Peter and his wife\, Sheel\, focus their philanthropic activities on health and medical matters\, particularly on children impacted by homelessness. They support numerous charities\, including The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation\, The American Cancer Society\, Home Start (San Diego’s charity targeting the prevention of child abuse) and various health and wellness initiatives at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, Minn. Peter is a significant donor and a founding member of the Stand Up To Cancer Legacy Endowment Circle and a primary donor to the Lucky Duck Foundation (San Diego’s leading homelessness charity). \nCaroline Winn | CEO\, San Diego Gas & Electric\nCaroline Winn is chief executive officer for San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)\, one of Sempra’s regulated California utilities. Sempra is a San Diego-based energy services holding company whose subsidiaries provide electricity\, natural gas and value-added products and services. Winn currently serves on the board of directors for Father Joe’s Villages and Monarch School; the executive council for Western Energy Institute; and the director’s council of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. DESCRIPTION:“Freelance” Day in BizTown is for 4th-6th graders to take part in our McGrath Family JA BizTown program. This provides students the opportunity to join our program and be part of the BizTown community outside of school activities.\nThe McGrath Family JA BizTown is a 10\,000 square foot mini-city where you will discover how to start and run a profitable business. Students will become a BizTown “citizen” and work a job at one of 21 life-sized San Diego businesses. They will earn paychecks\, open bank accounts\, pay taxes\, vote\, and are challenged to earn a profit in your business.\nThe JA BizTown curriculum will be taught via Zoom by JA staff during the months of April and May to prepare for the simulation. DESCRIPTION:As the students complete the JA Company Program curriculum and bring their business ventures to fruition\, the student company teams are invited to showcase their businesses at the JA San Diego Student Company of the Year Competition. Local business professionals will judge the students on their written annual reports and verbal presentations. They will compete against other schools across San Diego County to be awarded JA San Diego Student Company of Year. The top San Diego teams are later submitted for inclusion in JA USA’s National Student Leadership Summit. DESCRIPTION:Student & adult event time: 9:30am-12:30pm\n\nFeaturing: JA Take Stock in Your Future\nThrough JA Take Stock in Your Future\, students discover the benefits and challenges of investing in the stock market as part of a broader\, long-term investment strategy and the risks and rewards of trading. (grades 9-12) The program includes five 45- minute sessions\, with additional extended learning activities and optional digital assets offered throughout\, including an optional online or site-based JA Stock Market Challenge competition. \nJA Stock Market Challenge is the culminating event for our JA Take Stock in Your Future program. This optional fast-paced mock stock market simulation invites students from all over the county to compete against each other to build the largest mock portfolio.
