JA Stock Market Challenge brings the Excitement of Wall Street to San Diego

Hundreds of high school students and business professionals from San Diego found out if they could “make it” in the fast-paced trading world of Wall Street at Junior Achievement’s first-ever Stock Market Challenge, sponsored by Qualcomm and Dowling & Yahnke.

“The room was filled with a lot of excitement and stress all rolled into one,” said Antonio Solares, a member of the 1st place winning student team from Montgomery High.

The competition, hosted at Qualcomm on Tuesday, May 2, gave 140 students from ten-area high schools an opportunity to experience the thrill of the stock market during a live high-tech trading simulation. Later that evening, 12 corporate teams participated in this simulation.

The event is designed to connect teens to the future world of business and to raise funds to support JA’s life-changing financial literacy programs.

We are thankful to event sponsors, Northwestern Mutual, Retirement Benefits Group, Intuit, Reilly Financial Advisors, and Synergy One Lending, who donated time and energy to make the event a huge success. JA is proud to announce the following winning teams:

1st place winning student team is “The Absent Group” from Montgomery High School representing the Sweetwater Union High School District. The group increased their portfolio by 26.5%. Members included: Anotonio Solares, Adan Gomez, Ashley Del Toro, Jorge Cerda and Christian Vela. (photo below)

2nd place student team is “The Wildcats of Wall Street” from El Camino High School representing the Oceanside Unified School District. The group increased their portfolio by 25%. Members include: Jake Huggins, Serjie Lorenz Alforque, Garrett Hendren, Josten Ignacio and Katie Nelson. (photo below)

The adult winning team, Dowling & Yahnke scored the highest net-worth. Members include: Grant Webster, Scott Smerud, Dan Rubin and John Dudeck. (photo nelow)

Key Quotes:

Students and adults left the competition exhilarated with new insight into the world of investment and finance. Here is some of the feedback from the event:

Antonio Solares, a member of the 1st place winning student team from Montgomery High: “We carefully watched the stocks go up and down and decided, at the last minute, to take a calculated risk to invest in a smaller company. I am proud to say this decision earned us the title of the Stock Market Champions. I learned so much from this program. I will definitely leave high school with a greater knowledge and understanding of how to invest, than most of my peers.”

Courtney Carpenter, a senior from Vista High School: “The room was filled with a lot of excitement and stress all rolled into one. I feel confident I can invest my money and maybe even earn capital gains to help pay for my future expenses.”

Grant Webster, JA YES (Young Executive Society) Member and Portfolio Manager at Dowling & Yahnke:  " The JA Yes team has been working on this event all year long and it was so rewarding to give 210 students the opportunity to learn about long-term investing in a fun, simulated stock market setting.

JA YES is a dynamic group of young San Diego professionals who have come together to advance financial literacy and expand Junior Achievement programs to as many students as possible.

How it Works?

The teams begin with $500,000 in fictitious funds and interacted with on-site traders to buy and sell shares in 26 companies with the goal of building the highest-net worth portfolio by the end of the trading period. The trading is fast, fun and furious as 60 trading days are condensed into two hours. Teams had to think on their feet as they made real-trades in real-time, while filtering through the changing news and stock tips.
